What you said about the brake lever gave me an idea.
I switched to the second engine, and the gauge readings are correct, including the equalizing reservoir.
I then moved the reverser on the second engine into reverse to match it's direction in the consist. I ran the train from the second engine, and the gauges worked perfectly, except for air flow, which won't move to zero.
When I went back to the lead engine, the equalizing pressure had moved. However, it still doesn't change when applying or releasing the brakes.
We're definitely onto something with the second engine - although where to go with this, I'm not sure.
