I have been attempting to replace the horrible horn on the Springfield GP9. Is there a drop in replacement. I did not see one in the file library.

The best solution is here. It's that and a whole lot more. This is a huge step up for the engine sounds on all the locos that are powered by the 567 prime mover.

I know Hancock air whistles can be an "acquired taste", but out of curiosity, are you unhappy with the audio quality of the whistle (no guarantees that I can change what you don't like), or do you just prefer the sound of a "normal" locomotive horn over the Hancocks?

Not disparaging anyone's work, you are correct, it is an acquired taste. The sound quality is I am sure close to prototypical, however somewhat annoying. Over the years I have noticed that running prototypical here at RWA is sometimes outweighed by the desire to make it one's own.

On the trainsimcommunity website, Central New Jersey Railfan has a re-worked Hancock whistle for the Budd RDC which is much crisper and offers a more direct sound than the OEM whistle. In his Audio pack for a multitude of different loco's, he replaced the Hancock with a a whistle more akin to the Leslie A200 but the model GP9 still shows the Hancock Air Chime. I remember first hearing it as a tennager on a RDC and thought it was a "sissy" sound! !*roll-laugh*!

Thanks for writing back! I had no intention of saying one shouldn't swap the Hancock for something they like better; I was just curious if it was a matter of preference or something technical which maybe I could have been able to address. The New Haven railroad was quite (in-?) famous for their widespread use of the air whistles, so naturally we had to include one on the VNH. !*salute*!

Thanks for the info, I wasn't aware of such a mod existing. Good to know! More choice is always good.

Cheers,
Michael

It seems like when it comes to warning sounds 'annoying' is just what you want. Maybe New Haven has got it right!

In that case I should make available my extensive library of recordings of my son complaining about how other kids have more stuff and how life is unfair.
