I first noticed that in one of Amtrak's publicity photos. I suppose it's possible that they are trying to match the end overhang of the rolling stock these engines are intended to pull, the rationale having something to do with the dynamics of coupler swing. The only other thing that would occur to me - at least this early in the morning - is some concern for the effect of wreckage in grade crossing collisions, but these would be rare: AFAIK there are only two left between Boston and New Haven, while there are none between New Haven and Washington. I don't know how many there are between Philadelphia and Harrisburg at this point.
