More RAM!

Unread postby Chacal » Tue Feb 04, 2020 12:12 pm

I just replaced the RAM in my 10-years-old PC (Intel CoreI7 920).
I had 6GB DDR3 1600 MHz, I installed 12 GB DDR3 1333 MHz.
The amount of RAM is definitely more important than its clock speed.

TS2020 really flies now!
Used to load in 10 minutes, now takes about 1.
If I started a web browser the game became a slideshow, now it makes no difference.
Used to load textures paunfully slow, it was like someone was actually painting the rollong stock, now it's instant.
The disk activity light used to be on almost continuously, now it's mostly off.

Also my games volume is striped on 2 WD Black HDDs in RAID 0. I tried using a SSD, but this is faster.
RAID 0 is not safe, but I don't care, these are just games and I have backups.

Now the remaining way to speed it up is to replace the video cards...
Over the hill and gathering speed

RAM is cheap and the easiest performance improvement. SSDs and a newer video card and woo hoo!!!!! !!*ok*!!

Try 2 SSDs in RAID 0 and it should really fly. If you happen to buy Samsung SSDs.... be sure to install their own NVME specific driver rather then using the default Windows one. It is definitely faster. But you likely are using SATA ones with that old computer. Not sure if they have their own driver for those as well.
