I'd pretty much settled on Nvidia for my next card but I didn't expect the current one to fail (still have to confirm tonight). I know a few of you have already upgraded to some of the newest models so I thought I'd ask for your opinions on performance.

Aside from TS I also play Skyrim and the like so if you can relate experience with other games I'd appreciate it.

eta ~~ I'm seeing several threads on tech forums saying the 1060 is plenty enough for 1080p resolution (which I run) and the 1070 is overkill more suitable for 4K or VR. Otoh the 1070 will remain viable longer as games improve to meet the GPU capabilities.

I have just obtained a GTX1060 6GB because it is much cheaper than the 1070, and as you say is more suited to those of us who play on 1080p res, it's a brilliant card I'm really chuffed to bits with it, I couldn't afford the 1080, but, have read on the nVidia website today after yesterday's driver update that many folks have a few problems with that card in various new PC games, as well as some other issues, so, I'm glad I didn't get it in the end, really, it's a bit overkill for me, and costs an arm and a leg to get it anyway, stay with a 1060, I'm sure you won't go far wrong with that. The performance in this game is excellent, I have played on all of the German routes I have collected over the years, both DLC and freeware, which are notorious resource hogs, and I considered an excellent benchmark, and all of the layouts run as smooth as silk, marvellous stuff, looking forward to the TSW CSX Heavy Haul release shortly and see how it performs.
I've also played on Dirt Rally and Call of Duty Ghosts, Black Ops and Advanced Warfare, 4 different Battlefield versions and have had no problems with performance, temperature overheating, fps stuttering, tearing, or, anything, I'm really happy.

I've had a 1060 for a month now on my new laptop and it is wonderful with both TS2017 and Trainz.

I'm using a 970 GTX and it cuts through Train Simulator and TSW like a hot knife through butter. I would assume anything above that model would be quite sufficient.

I have had the GTX 1060 6GB for 3 months and it is Ok for TS2017, though in some places of 3rd party routes (Lafayette,the Bergen, etc) it may have some fps problems, but at the end of the day it is the right price-performance card for this game.
However, if you have the money I would advise a good 1070, thinking in the oncoming game TSW. I was an active TSW beta tester in December and though the game was far from optimization, I believe the frame rate will not be as benign as it is TS2017.

I think we all need to wait and see if they fixed the FR problem before we jump off the bridge on what or what not might be required if one needs the urge for this new sim.

If you are sticking to 1080p res for the foreseeable future, the GTX 1060 should be fine in most cases. I play in 4K res most of the time, so I pretty much at the minimum had to go with the GTX 1070 when buying my new laptop. I don't really care about sky high frame rates, so I use a frame rate limiter that reduces the load on my 1070. This has the benefits of using less electricity, it runs cooler and will help extend the life of the chip.

Whether to go with the 1060 or 1070 kinda depends on a few factors.....

How high or minimum of a frame rate do you want to play at?

Do you think you will be playing at a res higher than 1080p (1440p or 2160p) in the future?

How long do you want the card to last before you think you will need to buy a new one?

Can you afford or do you even want to pay the extra money that the 1070 costs over the 1060?


Here is a short 2 1/2 minute video that directly compares the 1060 to the 1070 in some fairly modern games at ultra graphics settings. It shows frame rates at both 1080p and 2160p (4K) resolutions. Hope it helps you decide.....

Both the GTX 1060 and 1070 are great cards. (Don't get me talking about the 1080)
The choice between them can be difficult.
Your rig must be balanced - cpu, mobo, gpu, ssd, cooling, psu, case, etc.
The code in TS 2017 is not optimised for the Pascal Cards so which one you buy 1060 or 1070 depends on certain other factors like below.
I run the GTX 1060 (6GB VRAM) on an i7 PC overclocked to 4.0GHz on a 1920 x 1080 Monitor.
I run the GTX 1070 (8GB VRAM) on an i5 PC overclocked to 4.4GHz on a 2560 x 1440 (144Hz) monitor.
To me if you want the GTX 1070 you need to overclock the cpu to >4.0Ghz, and/or have a high-end widescreen monitor or HDTV, or multiple monitors.
IMO the GTX 1060 runs best at an overclock or clock speed of around 3.6 - 4.0Ghz on a monitor size up to 2560 x 1440, or dual monitors.

BTW Both the GTX 1060 and 1070 run the UE 4 engine very well indeed ie in DTG Euro Fishing, clear vibrant video, no crashes, and very few variations in frame rates..

I've just found out tonight, that with a nVidia GTX Series 10 card, we can now get a new screen resolution, 2715x1527, it's in your settings in your nVidia control panel, it's called Dynamic Super Resolution, apparently when you launch any game it will compress the res and gives 4k graphics on a 1080 monitor. Something else to be experimented with in our game.....

Like others have said they are both good.
With TS2017, the main difference will be AA settings. My GTX 1070 loafs along at 2X2 SSAA, rarely going over 60% usage. I run a 1080p monitor.
The 1070 will also have the oats if you plan to go to TSW in the future.
