New (to me anyways) Nvidia drivers

Unread postby arizonachris » Sat Dec 14, 2013 3:55 pm

Decided it was time yesterday to see what Nvidia had in the way of new drivers. I was running the 314.something's and they were ok, I suppose.

New drivers they call "Game Ready" R331's (331.82's) These drivers, without touching any TS game settings, and doing a "Clean Install" (means I checked the box in Nvidia's custom installer to do so) I got an instant 10fps boost in TS2014. Nice. I'll take it. Toggled FXSS to on, toggled V Sync to on, left most other Nvidia controls at application decide. No jaggies, no moire. TSX on, all game settings high, detail set at 10. Procedural flora off. I was getting a low of 4fps on parts of Stevens, now never dips below 14. Using FRAPS frame rate counter, not TS built in counter. (Oh, and the new drivers didn't change my HDMI sound from speakers to the monitor's built in speakers. Freaked me out when that happened last time.)

I'll take screen shots of settings if anyone wants.

Edit: wrong driver # !DUH!

Those are the drivers I'm using too. They do seem to be working very well.

Interesting. I appreciate any performance improvement.
I guess I should update.

I tried to (well actually I did) apply to my laptop w/ a GeForce GT540M chip. Minor improvement in FPS, but negative effect on SpeedFan, which I use to monitor my core and GPU temps when running TS2014. When the GPU is idle it reads normally around 50°C but after the installation it would read 0°C then spike to load temp, then back to 0°. So I just rolled it back and now all is again right with the world.
Chris - the version for my chip was 331.82.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained, I always say. Just didn't work out this time. *!rolleyes!*
As always, YMMV.
Best, !*cheers*!

Nvidia doesn't recommend their "generic" drivers for mobile chips, they (used to anyways) suggest getting the latest drivers from the machine's makers. I use MSI Afterburner to monitor and control my video card: http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm , and Core Temp to monitor the CPU: http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ . I had no trouble with the MSI tool and the new drivers. But if you're happy with rolling back, that's OK too.

I tried the new drivers (331.82 for me) and I had the same issue I've had with any of them over 314.22; the cursor freezes and jumps around (when using a browser, not in TS). I ran TS2014 just fine and it seemed smoother on Steven's Pass. I did some reading on the nvidia boards and lots of people have this problem. I'm now trying the beta 331.93.
So far I'm not having any issues. Hope it holds up.

Wow! its not just me then. I had installed the GE Force Experience a few weeks back. It seems like there are CONSTANT driver updates. SO i now have trouble with my cursor all the time. They released a new update in the past day or so,cursor still has problems. Yes RW is running great. Am I really going to have to go back at least 3 drivers to get back to normal?

For what it's worth, I had problems with the new drivers a few weeks ago and decided to uninstall the GeForce Experience. That seemed to fix the cursor problem for me, so when I installed the new driver for my new Nvidia card, I unchecked the Ge Force Experience and also their update tool if listed. That way they won't constantly prompt you for updates.
My mother got one of those half assed Nvdia updates through windows update, and it did the same thing to her. Her whole PC would lock up.

I still say that clean install doesn't work right. I've been keeping track when I have used it, and one of the Nvidia folders keeps getting more bloated. In the old days it really did a clean install.
More than once in the past couple of years I've fixed issues, by uninstalling and then deleting the Nvidia driver folders before doing a true clean install and the problems went away.
New build. i7-7700k, MSI Z270 Gaming M5 Mobo, Hyper 212 Evo, Corsair DDR4 3200 Mhz RAM, Klipsch Pro Mediea 2.1 Speakers, Samsung 850 Evo SSD, HAF XM Case, Asus Strix GTX 1070 and Cooler Master Storm XT Keyboard.
Slick with Pretty Rainbow Colors.

I always do a custom install, knocking out the 3D stuff and that Nvidia Experience as well.

I must be going mad - I can only find on the NVidia US site the WHQL 331.82 driver and the 331.93 beta driver - BOTH game ready.
So where are downloading this 331.86 driver or has it been replaced by the 331.93 beta driver? !**conf**!
Thanks

Chris -
many thanks - can now breathe a sigh of relief!! -not going mad after all (not this week anyway) !*roll-laugh*!
Both the WHQL driver and the '91beta driver are excellent.

Well I uninstalled the GEforce Experience, and installed the latest driver. No more cursed cursor problems. So much for a program that is designed for optimal video card performance! Just install the drivers direct, from now on.
