Well no, the reviewers seem to disagree.
Perhaps they're better than other free software, but I'd stick with real software.

I hate to tell you this, but the reviewers are wrong on this one. The only paid Anti-virus I've used that's worth anything is Kaspersky, but for free ones use MSE for sure.
One thing Microsoft Security Essentials is best at, is detecting unknown malware that isn't in it's little database.

Since building my own PC a few months back, I've been doing a whole lot of reading, plus practical experience talking to other nerds and my own woes about some hardware. It's becoming clear, that the large and well known review sites are reluctant to report problem software and hardware. They are shilling their advertisers products and not always telling the truth.
Trust the nerds here, stick with MSE, Kaspersky, Avira for your anti-malware needs. Malwarebytes has excellent tools for finding dug in virus' and malware.
Think about it, Microsoft knows better than anyone else, where their back doors and security holes in their products are.... They also don't want a lot of phone calls to tech support about malware induced problems, that cost a fortune. :D

But it is Nowhere near the best, Kaspersky is what screwed up my laptop a few weeks ago

FORD!!! (1982 bronco!) Also. What do you all think of Norton? I don't really care for it... In the old days, (2010) I ran RW at default screen res (1920x1080) and got good frames. Now, I get maybe 6 or 7 frames in default res on a bare stretch of track. (Onle scenery is a set of crossing gates. Is a defrag what I need? Iwas told that a hard drive defrag would bring all that good stuff back. (I now run at 800x600, and still get crappy frames.)

I've tried Norton twice and hated it. It bogged down both my mother's and my systems. Others must know this too, because the local electronic supply is trying to dump Norton software for $10 and lower.
I've also tried AVG Free and paid versions. That one gives too many false positives and won't stop one of the more common and hard to get rid of malwares, which is Zedo.com.

As far as Kaspersky, I got turned onto that by a friend that's a developer and put it on my mother's PC. It's the only thing that stops the constant attacks she gets from cruising all these shopping sites looking for shoes of all things... It's also easy on resources.
I keep telling her to quit opening unknown attachments that her friends send her and quit using all those shopping sites... but she gets really angry. !*hp*!
In any case, I don't know why Kaspersky would have messed up a laptop, unless it has conflicting software issues, or something like a celeron CPU.

I've been using BitDefender Antivirus Plus for years.
It usually comes up at or near the top of reviews.
I don't use all of its features and I don't use their other products (Bitdefender Internet Security or Total Security).
BitDefender has a game mode and can be configured to reduce its footprint automatically when you start Railworks.

But my best protection is DeepFreeze.
Every time I reboot, any change to my system disk is reset.

I've used Microsoft Security Essentials for a couple years now with no issues and its asked to quarantine some things that were unrecognized by the database without issue and I can say "yes or no" rather than automatically locking down. Plus its never crashed or mangled a computer and is light on resources which will speed up your gameplay slightly.
