This is the replacement HUD: http://uktrainsim.com/filelib-info.php?form_fileid=26800

It still could be more transparent and have a better F3 panel. Plus I don't like all of the buttons/icons. It is useful however as it shows more of the bottom screen area.
There are other, even more minimal mods around.

There is still a bug in RW3/TS12 as the trainline and brake cylinder pressures are not dislayed correctly on all engines in any HUD.
I wish for a way to have the F5 display on by choice along with the F4 HUD.

I use Marleyman's HUD Mod it's far the more transparent around... it lets me see much more of pannel and instruments which is better to feel more cab sway also.

I would use Marleyman's HUD if he had included the selector buttons for the brake display. The buttons are still there but hidden. Playing hide and seek while trying to switch from air to dynamic brakes on a 2% downslope is more trouble that the other advantages are worth.

Driving prototype fashion is probably best, as one doesn't need the HUD. Raildriver consoles are expensive and not trouble free.
Given the current state of TS2012 few can do completely without the F3, F4 or F5 displays, even the F6 and F7 are very useful sometimes.

Many routes have neither mileposts nor proper speed signs near the track.
I am running the NEC now and find the track vs signalling vs indicated speed very confusing and contradicting at times. All speed signs are hidding beneath the tracks so I follow the F4 HUD. This allows me to "read ahead" the timetable I (the virtual engineer) am presumed to have memorized and which is lying on the control desk in front of me for instant perusal in case of a service disruption or just for reference purposes.

Engineers rely on their timetables, route knowledge and lineside signs and signalling. Most of us just play with the trains for pleasure and relaxation and cannot be bothered with learning rules and timetables, so we rely on visual aids.
Hardly any route comes with detailed maps, employee timetables of the scenarios and a concise set of rules in the frst place.
Some dedicated freeware authors/builders strive for perfection, realism and user satisfaction, COARW and NERW come first to my mind.
Most commercial outfits are only in it for the money and abandon their products as soon as they are released, already advertising the next but never correcting past mistakes nor learning from them.

I realy want more good USA routes and am willing to pay for them. But then RSC has to come up with something better than the SP Donner Pass or the NEC (to some extent).
UK players have gotten Woodhead and will get Settle-Carlisle soon, both of which look very promising. Woodhead has been well received.
US players only have the HSC which is up to par. B-SB needs an upgrade to HSC level and the other commercial routes barely make the grade.
I wonder wether the less than favourable reception of RSC's latest US attempts have scared possible MSTS conversions off? There is so much available for that platform that me and many others are willing to pay for. What keeps their authors waiting?

Thankfully there are some good freeware routes avaialble, and freeware is good for your wallet. Just keep supporting their author and respect their efforts.

Drifting wide off course here, this thread is about Doc's generous offering of a free locomotive enhancement that has given me quite some ideas to play with and pursue over the the coming weeks.

The prime goal of enhancement pack is the new lighting TSX effects. Therefore if TSX is off you won't have any new lighting enhancement (the main are headlight and cablights, but not only).
However, the enhancements includes also: new cabviews, new headout views, the reduced instruction's screen (all of them together allow you to drive mouseless and see more of the track and gauges), the transparent F1 HUD, and conductor. All this enhancements are not related to the use of TSX, so you can still get many advantages with the pack.

The new game engine (v11.0b) is much better than previous, so the game is running far smoother even in low/medium machines (like mine *!greengrin!*). If that's your case also (low/medium rig to play the game) you can try the "Normal" (instead the "Extreme") version or even the "Higher FPS" version, which allows you to play with same performance (same fps) don't matter if headlight is on or off. From Readme:
If you have a low/medium machine and usually getting low fps running TS2012 with TSX On, you can try the following version of our Lightings: "Higher FPS". In this optional version, the light projected by headlight won't cast shadows, as normal headlight does. When not casting shadows the performance of computer (with TSX On) tends to be the same than using the default headlights (casting shadows). With this optional version doesn't matter if you turn headlight on/off, your fps tends to be the same. Try the "normal" version first, and only then the "Higher FPS" version.

And finally, whatever choice you did, you can get a bit more smoothness (even with the quite same fps) setting in game Menu | Options | Graphic Detail | Shader to medium or low.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Doc.
