Railfanning in a Solar Eclipse

This idea just popped into my head. I thought it might make an interesting photo opportunity for us all. I'm getting myself a pair of those solar eclipse sunglasses. (For obvious reasons)

Anyway, just a small topic I'd like to put out in the com. I think this will probably be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Do you need a solar eclipse filter for a camcorder and DSLR camera when wearing solar eclipse glasses? I too would love to get some kind of video of the eclipse. I'm just not sure if it would damage anything because directly pointing your lens at the sun might damage your camera.

NASA and Business Insider have some great information on space photography and photographing an eclipse. Essentially their articles boil down to you WILL need some sort of filter on any traditional camera with a zoom feature since zoom features increase the amount of light being focused into the camera's electronic capturing system but on a smartphone with a they for the most part, unless you got one designed more for photos; have a very tiny zoom the effects will be not as severe but still can cause damage on some phones.

Not sure if my camera needs any kind of enhancement, since I don't know it's model or anything.

If you use the auto aperature mode, the camera's iris will treat the eclipse like night. This will allow the full brightness of the sun in and possibly overload its sensors.

I doubt it, because the sun/moon would not be the center of focus.

Okay, because I'm thinking about doing some sort of time lapse in a field.

No problem as long as you don't aim directly into the sun.

I think it depends on the total strength of the lens. I heard they have to be at least a strength of 12.
